What Does HODL Mean?

HODL is crypto slang for "hold on for dear life," meaning an investor holds an asset through price swings instead of trading in and out. The term started in 2013 as a misspelling of "hold" in a Bitcoin forum post, and it stuck because it captured a simple idea: resist panic-selling when prices drop.

Welcome To HODL

This article explores the "HODL" strategy (hold on for dear life), encouraging crypto investors to hold assets long-term rather than over-trading, which historically leads to lower returns. It discusses the origins of HODL, its impact on market dynamics, and the role of crypto banks, which offer high yields but lack FDIC insurance.

What Experts Say About Retail Traders

Experts agree that retail traders trade too much - actually way too much. Ordinary investors are more likely to sell winners early and hold onto losers due to emotional biases. They try to time the market and buy specific dips, which typically leads to returns that are lower than a simple buy-and-hold strategy.

Although stocks and bonds have performed well over the past 30 years, according to one of BlackRock’s research teams, investors have earned nothing, adjusted for inflation. The primary cause? Over-trading.

HODL: Hold On for Dear Life

The term HODL first emerged in 2013 as a misspelling of HOLD by someone with the username @GameKyuubi on Bitcointalk.org. The term HODL stuck to reflect growing sentiment in the crypto community that crypto prices will continue to rise in the long-term, so don’t fret when a position drops 40%. Shortly after, a phrase with similar meaning emerged: Diamond Hands.

Both imply the same investing strategy: Don’t Sell. Ever. Buy the dips and continue HODLing because one day, your crypto positions will be worth millions.

In many ways, HODL is actually an internet and community-driven solution to the challenges retail investors face with over-trading and acting impulsively. The challenge is that HODLing also skews traditional market mechanics.

When you think of how prices are dictated by supply and demand, the supply aspect refers to the number of coins that people are willing to sell. If no one is willing to sell, the price increases until someone is willing to sell at that price point.

Now imagine if 90% of Bitcoin holders refuse to ever sell. The supply is now, at most, 10% of the total market, causing dramatic price fluctuations that are increased further due to highly leveraged positions of speculative traders.

HODL & Crypto Banks

Many crypto projects have started catering to HODLers by offering interest bearing products with superior yields to banks. This is great for investors anticipating that crypto prices will continue to rise, because it allows investors to maintain cash flow without selling any of their assets.

The challenge is knowing who to trust. New-age crypto-banks have emerged, offering dramatically higher interest rates, but these crypto banks do not benefit from FDIC Insurance.

Given that many crypto-banks are competing to offer the highest yields to attract new customers, this indicates that many are heavily leveraged and similarly betting on an increase in cryptocurrencies’ prices. If that reality emerges, you’ll look like a genius and increase your returns.

If crypto markets crash, there’s actually a really good reason for FDIC Insurance because it protects your assets. If a crypto-bank without FDIC Insurance fails, you get nothing. That includes the cryptocurrencies you contributed to the bank. No matter the amount, the government has no plans to bailout crypto investors.

Time Will Tell If HODLing Is Smart

If crypto markets crash, you’ll look like the opposite of a genius and we’ll let your crypto-skeptic friends come up with the insults. At the end of the day, cryptocurrencies seem here to stay and HODLing does help retail traders avoid some of their greatest flaws, plus there are 3 factors that continue to bode well for HODL disciples.

1. Low-Interest Rates

Although rising inflation has caused the Federal Reserve to announce a series of interest-rate hikes this year, economists remain skeptical of the Federal Reserves’ resolve to deliver on each of these hikes. Increasing interest rates will hurt crypto and stock markets alike as investors can now find higher yields in safer assets such as bonds and treasures.

2. Inflation

Inflation is much higher than the target 2% inflation mark from the Federal Reserve, but even if they manage to reduce inflation to 2%, many investors are growing worried about the consistent devaluation of the dollar and seeking assets that will increase in value, versus cash which is worth less with every passing year.

3. Public Company Adoption

As companies begin investing in cryptocurrencies to hedge against inflation and currency risk, including taking certain cryptos as payment, this helps drive mainstream adoption. If crypto prices rise, it’s a safe bet that other companies will follow since they can list Bitcoin as a cash equivalent on their balance sheet. The key difference? This cash equivalent can dramatically increase or decrease in value.

Key Takeaways

  • Retail investors often underperform due to over-trading and emotional biases, with a simple buy-and-hold strategy historically yielding better returns.
  • HODL was popularized in the crypto community, encouraging investors to hold through market fluctuations, distorting traditional market supply & demand.
  • While some crypto banks offer attractive yields for HODLers, these banks lack FDIC insurance, posing a significant risk if they fail.
  • Rising inflation and the potential for public companies to adopt cryptocurrency are factors supporting the HODL approach, though rising interest rates could introduce volatility to crypto markets.

Testing the Discipline Without the Stakes

The HODL mindset is really a bet against your own impulses. The article above points out that retail investors usually underperform a simple buy-and-hold strategy because they sell winners early and hold onto losers too long. That's a behavior problem, not a market problem, and behavior is easiest to practice before real money is on the line. Deciding whether it's worth sitting through a rough stretch also depends on what that money could be doing elsewhere in the meantime, the exact comparison at the center of time value of money practice problems.

Inside the Rapunzl investing simulator, which starts every student with a simulated $10,000 portfolio, it's possible to buy a volatile stock, watch the price swing over several trading days, and practice sitting through a dip instead of selling out of it. Pulling up live market data alongside that position turns the abstract idea of "riding out volatility" into something a student can actually watch happen, day by day, without a single real dollar at risk.

That same discipline is what the HODL crowd is chasing with crypto, just with far higher stakes and no FDIC insurance to fall back on if the bet goes wrong.

The supply-and-demand piece is worth sitting with too. Most markets assume that at some price, a seller will show up. HODL culture tries to break that assumption on purpose: if enough holders genuinely refuse to sell no matter what, the tradable supply shrinks and price swings get sharper in both directions. That is a very different dynamic from a stock market where large-cap companies have millions of shares changing hands every day, which is part of why crypto prices can move so much faster than a typical index fund.
