Personal finance in Alaska
Alaska has no statewide graduation requirement for personal finance. The state sets only a bare credit floor of 21 units under 4 AAC 06.075 (including 3 units of social studies) and leaves course content, sequencing, and whether personal finance appears as a labeled subject to each of its roughly 53 school districts. Some districts go further — Anchorage School District requires one semester of Economics in grade 12 — but no statewide course, assessment, or personal-finance course code exists.
As of December 2024, DEED's revised Alaska Social Studies Standards include Anchor Standard 12, 'Decision-Making and Personal Finance,' as one of 20 K-12 content anchor standards within the Economics discipline strand, applied across grade bands including 9-12. It is the closest thing Alaska has to a personal-finance framework, but it remains a single embedded anchor standard rather than a dedicated personal-finance standards document.

Why Alaska schools choose Rapunzl
Alaska has no statewide personal finance requirement. It is a strong local-control state, and what students learn is decided district by district, though the 2024 Social Studies Standards added a Decision-Making and Personal Finance anchor standard as the closest thing to a state framework. For a district that chooses to teach personal finance, whether through Anchorage's Economics course or something new, curriculum that works without a state mandate to lean on matters. Rapunzl gives it structure: students manage a $10,000 portfolio in a live-market simulator, and the modules run from a short unit to a full semester.
- 150,000+students have completed Rapunzl's curriculum
- 93%average financial literacy scores on national test over past 5 years, 26% higher than average
- 31interactive modules that can be customized into a course progression for your classroom
- 20+hours of gameplay in 2 interactive mini-games alongside our investment simulator and financial calculators
Teachers get a dashboard that exports grades and crosswalks each lesson to Alaska's Decision-Making and Personal Finance anchor standard, with materials in English and Spanish that work with a screen reader. Rapunzl's January scholarship competition gives students a reason to keep managing their portfolio whether or not a course is required.
Alaska personal finance requirement FAQ
Alaska has not adopted a personal finance graduation requirement — it is a strong local-control state with no statewide mandate — but its Department of Education and Early Development adopted Social Studies Standards in December 2024 that include a dedicated personal-finance content standard for the first time.
Alaska Social Studies Standards (adopted December 2024) — Anchor Standard 12: Decision-Making and Personal Finance.
Rapunzl is built on the Council for Economic Education's six pillars: earning income, spending, saving, investing, managing credit, and managing risk. Alaska's 2024 anchor standard on decision-making and personal finance draws on the same ideas, so the crosswalk above shows how Rapunzl's modules cover it.
Yes. Even though Alaska does not require a course, Rapunzl's six-pillar modules map onto the state's personal finance anchor standard, so a district that chooses to teach it has curriculum ready.
Students learn by trading a simulated $10,000 in real market conditions, and teachers track progress from a dashboard with grade export, bilingual materials, and screen-reader support.

Alaska sets no statewide graduation requirement, since course content is a local decision under the state's 21-unit credit floor, but the Department of Education and Early Development's December 2024 Social Studies Standards added Anchor Standard 12, "Decision-Making and Personal Finance," as a dedicated 9-12 content anchor for the first time. The open question for a district is which existing course, if any, is now expected to teach to that anchor.
There's no statewide course code, assessment, or enforcement tied to the anchor standard, and no cohort deadline attached to it, so a district can adopt it on its own timeline. Rapunzl scales from a three-week refresh to a full-year elective, so a district folding the new standard into an existing Economics or Social Studies course can size the unit to what the schedule allows.
